THE DOROTHY ANTOINETTE LASELLE
TRAVEL FELLOWSHIP
About the Fellowship
Recognizing the impact that travel can have on an artist’s career, the Dorothy Antoinette LaSelle Foundation has established the Dorothy Antoinette LaSelle Travel Fellowship. In the fall of 2024, the inaugural year for the Fellowship, two awards of $5,000 each will be distributed to artists working and residing in the state of Texas, enabling the recipients to complete a research trip to further their artistic practice.
Dorothy Antoinette “Toni” LaSelle, a pioneer of Modernism in Texas, traveled to Europe in 1927-28, after completing her MA at University of Chicago. She explored the art of England, Italy and France during this trip, which would not have been possible without a “study fund” she was awarded for works included in the First Student Art Exhibition at the Renaissance Society in 1926.
About the Juror
The guest juror is Dr. Erika Doss (Ph.D., University of Minnesota), a Distinguished Professor in the Edith O'Donnell Institute of Art History at the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Doss primarily studies American art history, popular culture and public culture of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her wide-ranging interests in modern and contemporary American art are reflected in the breadth of her publications, including most recently Spiritual Moderns: Twentieth-Century American Artists and Religion (2023), Monumental Troubles: Rethinking What Monuments Mean Today (editor, 2018) and Memorial Mania: Public Feeling in America (2010). The recipient of several Fulbright awards, Doss has held fellowships at the Stanford Humanities Center, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Rockwell Center for American Visual Studies, and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Newly arrived in Dallas, Doss is excited to learn more about contemporary art and artists in Texas.
